Five grand for a couple of hours work?
It seems easy money, but the deal ex-mercenary Max Iversson is chasing has gone disastrously wrong. Two of his friends are dead. And now he wants to find out who's behind their killings.
Detective Sergeant John Gallan is also looking for answers. He's investigating the fatal poisoning of a nightclub doorman. But leads are scarce and, when they do appear, so do bodies.
As Iversson struggles to stay alive, Gallan keeps on digging, unearthing in the process a shocking crime that's been unsolved for a long, long time.

Brilliant. The way we have more than one characters movements and how they tally up with the others is written so well. Hooked.

Love the way Simon writes storys in first & third person, makes it better in my view.

Of all the Simon Kernick books that I have read which is all of them,this for me is the best to date and I have told many of my family and friends about this title.

This book has everything. Excellent background to characters and pure adrenaline rush. The way the characters are all intricate in their own way makes this book an excellent candidate for another best seller. Thanks Simon.

Brilliant? No way. Everything is overkill - storyline, too many nasty characters and too few sympathetic ones, much stilted dialogue. No humour. Better editing required ('..while Joe and me handcuffed the two bouncers ...'). Read, for example, any books of Aussie author Peter Temple (The Broken Shore, Truth, etc), Nicci French,John Harvey, Sara Paretsky for more exciting, tighter and better crime- writing.
